SelectiveCoach was founded by two qualified teachers who have taught thousands of students across Catholic, independent and public schools, as well as adult English and the Pearson Test of English (PTE).
Ms Nguyen brings 20+ years of teaching experience, along with a background in commerce, finance and adult education that gives her experience beyond the classroom. She attended a Selective Agricultural High School, and has seen different education systems from both sides of the classroom. About 10 years ago she ran her own learning centre, before stepping away to raise her children.
Her experience across different schools led to a strong interest in Montessori and other approaches to learning, especially in the early years. She believes children understand best when they can first see, touch and explore an idea before moving to abstract methods.
Having experienced public, independent and selective education, she also believes families should know there is more than one path. Independent schooling may suit some families. Selective education can be another strong option, and because selective schools are public, there are no tuition fees.
Mr Yung is a qualified teacher and software engineer with 20+ years of combined experience across education and the software industry. He has taught both primary and high school students, including high school maths, and spent years building software for businesses before creating his own software business.
He returned to teaching after seeing how quickly technology and AI were changing the world. Today he brings together maths, software engineering and education, helping students understand difficult ideas by breaking them into clear, logical steps.
Together, they created SelectiveCoach around one simple idea: children need to understand, think and solve problems, not just memorise answers.
As AI and technology rapidly change the world children will grow into, we believe strong foundations in Maths and English, together with reasoning, creativity and technology skills, are more important than ever. Our aim is to prepare children not just for the next test, but for what comes after it.
We believe good tutoring is not about giving every child the same worksheet.
We identify what a student already knows, where the gaps are and what they need next. Our aim is to build understanding, confidence, problem-solving and independent thinking.
